‘Coastal Connections’ program focuses on threats to the Georgia coast

August 15, 2013

Threats to the Georgia coast, ranging from hurricanes to sea level rise, will be the topic of a Ships of the Sea Museum “Coastal Connections” lecture program on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the museum’s North Garden. University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography professor Clark Alexander will present the lecture.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAlexander offers an informative and visual program on the hazards facing Georgia’s coastal regions. Drawing on two decades of work in the area, he will discuss coastal hazards relevant to Georgia, such as tropical storms, sea level rise and more. He will also introduce the Georgia Coastal Hazards Portal, a Web-based tool that anyone can use to assess specific exposure to coastal hazards, and present up-to-the-minute results of ongoing research to better quantify coastal Georgia’s hazard vulnerability.

The talk is free and open to the public.
